Frequently Asked Questions
What are Unicode gamertags and how do they work?
Unicode includes over 150,000 characters from every writing system in the world. Among these are thousands of alternative letter forms — accented characters, mathematical variants, and decorative symbols — that look like regular Latin letters but are technically different characters. When you type "Shadow" and apply fraktur style, each letter becomes its Unicode Mathematical Fraktur equivalent: 𝔖𝔥𝔞𝔡𝔬𝔴. To the gaming platform, this is a completely different string — which means it's likely available even if the plain version is taken.
Which platforms support Unicode names?
Support varies by platform. Discord and Steam have full Unicode support — nearly everything works. Fortnite and Xbox support accented Latin letters and some mathematical variants. Valorant only allows basic diacritical marks. PlayStation and Minecraft Java Edition are ASCII only. Check our platform-specific pages for detailed character limits and compatibility guides.
Are fancy Unicode gamertags allowed?
Yes. Unicode characters are legitimate text characters, not hacks or exploits. Platforms that accept Unicode in names explicitly allow these characters. However, each platform enforces its own content policy — offensive names get rejected regardless of which characters you use.
How do I use the per-character scroll selector?
Type your name in the input field. Each letter appears as a column with up/down arrows. Scroll through Unicode alternatives for each character independently — mix a fraktur "S" with an accented "h" and a bold "a" for a name that's entirely your own. You can also apply a style preset first (bold, italic, fraktur, etc.) to transform the whole name, then fine-tune individual characters with the scroll selector.
Can I use these names on multiple platforms?
The same generated name will work differently across platforms. A fully styled name with fraktur letters and wing decorations works perfectly on Discord and Steam, but you'd want to simplify it — using only accented characters — for Fortnite or Xbox. Use our platform sub-pages to generate names pre-configured for each platform's limits.
Troubleshooting Special Characters
Characters show as boxes or question marks
The platform or device doesn't have a font that supports those Unicode characters. Switch to simpler alternatives — accented Latin letters (like Ä, É, Ñ) have the widest support. Mathematical bold/italic and fraktur characters require modern font stacks that older consoles may lack.
Name is rejected when pasting into the platform
The platform filters out certain Unicode ranges. Valorant and PlayStation are the strictest. Try removing decorations first, then switch style presets to one using diacritical marks only. If it's still rejected, the platform likely only accepts basic ASCII — use our platform pages for compatible options.
Name looks different after pasting
Some platforms strip or normalize Unicode on submission. Combining characters (strikethrough, underline, wavy) are especially prone to this — the base letter stays but the effect disappears. Always preview your name in the platform's name change field before confirming.
Name exceeds character limit even though it looks short
Some Unicode characters take up more than one "code unit" internally. Emoji, enclosed characters (🅰), and certain decorations count as 2+ characters even though they display as one. Watch the character counter in the tool — it counts visible characters, but your platform may count bytes differently.
Other players can't search for or mention my name
Unicode names are harder to type for others. If your name uses fraktur or circled characters, teammates won't be able to @mention you by typing on a standard keyboard. For competitive games where communication matters, keep it subtle — one or two accented characters instead of a full style transformation.
Copy-paste adds extra invisible characters
Some browsers or clipboard managers insert zero-width spaces or directional markers when copying Unicode text. If a platform rejects your name unexpectedly, try pasting into a plain text editor first, then re-copying from there to strip hidden characters.
